Signs of a leak
How do I know if I have a slab leak?
Common signs include a water bill that rises without a change in use, a warm spot on the floor, the sound of running water when everything is off, damp or warm carpet, a water heater that runs constantly, and lower water pressure. One sign alone isn’t proof. Several together are a good reason to have the system tested.
How can I check for a leak myself?
Turn off every faucet, appliance, irrigation zone, and pool fill, then watch the leak indicator on your water meter or compare readings an hour apart. If water is still moving, close your home’s main shut-off. If the meter stops, the leak is inside the house. If it keeps moving, suspect the yard line or irrigation.
What does a warm spot on the floor mean?
A warm or hot spot, especially on tile, can mean a hot water line is leaking under the slab. Heat from the escaping water warms the concrete above it. A plumber can confirm it with pressure testing and thermal imaging.
Can a leak cause cracks in my walls or floors?
It can. Water leaking under a slab can wash out or swell the clay soil beneath it, and that movement can crack tile, drywall, or brick. Cracks have many causes, though, so they’re a clue to investigate, not proof of a leak.
Is a sewer smell a sign of a slab leak?
It can be a sign of a drain or sewer leak under the slab, but dry floor-drain traps and failed toilet seals cause odors too. Drain leaks don’t show on the water meter, so a camera inspection or hydrostatic test is used to find them.
Costs
How much does slab leak detection cost?
Detection is usually a paid service. National cost guides put typical slab leak detection at roughly $150–$400, with complex jobs costing more (Angi, 2026). Fort Worth prices vary by company and home. Ask for the fee before anyone comes out.
How much does slab leak repair cost?
National guides put a typical slab leak repair at roughly $630–$4,400 including detection (Angi, 2026), but your cost depends on where the leak is, the repair method, flooring replacement, and any water damage. Rerouting a whole system out of the slab can run roughly $4,000–$15,000 (Fixr). These are national figures, not quotes.
Why do quotes vary so much?
Access is the biggest factor. A leak under a closet is far easier to reach than one under a kitchen island. The method (spot repair, tunneling, reroute), flooring replacement, drywall patching, permits, and after-hours rates also move the price. Compare written quotes that describe the same scope.
Does it cost anything to use your service?
No. Asking us to match you with a local plumber is free, with no obligation. Any detection fee, service call, or repair price is set by the independent plumber, who should explain it before doing any work.
Insurance
Does homeowners insurance cover a slab leak?
It depends on your policy. Many policies cover sudden, accidental water damage and the cost of tearing out and replacing part of the floor to reach the pipe, but not the pipe repair itself. Damage from long-term seepage is often excluded. Read your policy or call your agent to confirm.
Does insurance cover foundation damage from a plumbing leak?
Some Texas homeowners policies or endorsements cover foundation damage caused by a plumbing leak, and many do not. Check your declarations page and policy language, and ask your agent specifically about foundation damage from plumbing leaks.
Will insurance pay for a repipe?
Usually not. Replacing old or worn pipe is generally treated as maintenance or an upgrade. Water damage caused by a sudden leak may still be covered even when the pipe replacement isn’t.
What should I do before calling my insurer?
Stop the water if you can, take photos and video of all damage, keep receipts for emergency work, and write down when you first noticed the problem. The Texas Department of Insurance has consumer guides on filing homeowners claims at tdi.texas.gov.
